Time to clean out and commit to a healthy diet for a healthy body once again! The program this year is a complete, but gentle, detox experience that does not involve fasting. I am proposing a medically supervised, high density nutrient, zero refined sugar, zero trans-fat diet for 7 weeks that also requires some form of exercise daily. The program begins April 9 and will meet on Thursdays from 7-8 PM through June 4. A fee of $330 includes a 3-week supply of Mediclear (www.thorne.com), a detailed detox booklet describing the program, including recipes; weekly group meetings and one half-hour pre-cleanse private meeting with me to individualize your program. Limited to 10 people only. Please contact email@example.com to schedule the private session. Please plan on buying fresh organic produce and other organic staples 2-3 times weekly at Rainbow Foods during the program.
On Thursday April 9 we will meet at the Silverbow Back Room from 7-8 PM to discuss the program. Any adult is welcome to attend this meeting. I will explain the program in detail and begin a sign-up list. The objective of the 3 weeks using Mediclear is to reduce food volume without experiencing hunger. Mediclear is a rice protein powder with added vitamins, minerals and special nutrients (such as green tea and MSM) to aid the liver cleanse the body of toxins. The amino acids in rice protein are not only hypoallergenic, but help in the detoxification and elimination processes. The nutrients in Mediclear are provided in the most absorbable, best utilized forms: e.g. calcium and magnesium citrate-malate, pyridozal 5-phosphate (activated B6), folinic acid (activated folate) and a Thorne Research patented form of chromium, “Ultra-chrome.”
Week 1 diet eases you into the program by reducing potentially allergenic and toxic foods. Just taking the example of vegetables, you WILL eat as desired: arugula, asparagus, artichokes, bean sprouts, bell peppers, bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, cabbage, eggplant, endive, escarole, all types of greens and lettuce, green beans, jicama, mushrooms, okra, green peas, radishes, spinach, squash (summer and winter), sweet potatoes, taro, turnips, yams, zucchini — all fresh and raw, or steamed, grilled, sauteed, roasted or juiced but not fried. Veggies you will NOT eat are corn, tomato, tomato sauce, and any creamed vegetables. In the breads & cereals category, you WILL eat, as desired, products made from rice, oat, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, potato flour, tapioca or amaranth. You will NOT eat corn, nor any gluten containing products including wheat, spelt, kamut, barley or rye. You will get plenty of recipes and menu samples for week 1.
You will start by adding 1 serving (2 scoops) of Mediclear powder once daily and slowly increase to 3 times daily during week 2, and then reduce the amount of Mediclear slowly through week 3. After the 3 weeks of active detox, you will begin a slow (27-day) organized re-introduction of potentially irritating foods: dairy, wheat, corn, tomatoes, coffee, eggs, shellfish, soy and peanuts. This part of the program is very important and requires commitment, being prepared, and keeping track of re-introduction symptoms. An easy chart for tracking food re-introduction and symptoms is provided in the Mediclear booklet. You will also get a gentle homeopathic “detox kit” to aid in the elimination and deep cleansing process (www.heelusa.com).
The word “toxin” may seem overly dramatic, like a foreign or alien substance that could not possible be part of our reality. Unfortunately, we live in a world steeped in toxins. Tens of thousands of chemicals have been introduced into our environment. Every year, 2000 new chemicals will be released on the market, some not fully tested for their effect on the human body. These are substances such as DDT, PCBs, dioxins, plasticizers. These are harsh detergents, synthetic perfumes, food addititives, food dyes, hydrogenated oils and fake sugars. Their effects include interfering with the immune system of living creatures (white blood cell function compromise, mucus membrane irritation and inflammation, liver congestion). Many toxins, such as pthalates and bisphenol-A, are also endocrine disruptors, mimicking or disrupting hormone activity, especially thyroid, prostate and ovarian hormones. Some toxins are carcinogenic.
Besides committing to helping our bodies clear out pesticide and pollutant residues, we can only benefit from relieving our livers, kidneys, lungs and skin from the burden of caffeine, alcohol and all drugs: recreational, over-the-counter, and prescription if possible. This is one of the most important reasons to meet with me first: if you are dependent on OTC or prescription medication (or illicit drugs) we must go through your detox program carefully together. Some medication can be suspended or reduced. Some may not. Please do not attempt unsupervised cleansing if you regularly ingest drugs of any kind, including caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.
I look forward to enjoy spring cleansing with you! It is a perfect time of year for this renewal of interest in clean living and the beauty and wonder of how good it can really feel to feel great!
